In the previous post I highlighted some of the day-to-day utility apps to help you use your HTC Touch Pro (or windows mobile) more efectively. I’ve been using some of these networking utilities that make your smartphone just another step closer to a portable PC.
- HTC Network Folder plugin: Ever felt the need to access files off your PC on a home network? Ever wanted to stream music from a media server? This nifty little plugin is the answer to your needs. It works just like accessing files across a local network on the Desktop PC.
- WM WiFi Router: Out and about with two computers, one phone with 3G data connection and only one cable. What do you do if both computers need access to critical information? Here’s another scenario, something you might get caught up in yourself, laptop – check, phone with 3G – check, usb cable – doh! forgot. This is where the Wifi Router app comes in real handy. It converts your windows mobile phone into, well, a router ofcourse. It uses your 3G connection to access the internet. Once activated the phone acts only as a wifi access point. It does make some major changes to the internals of the phone so be sure to back up anything sensitive/important before you deploy this. I remember installing a n alpha test release with incomplete features and had to hard rest my phone, an yeah, I didnt back anything up, so it was rather frustrating. The only catch with this app is that it comes with a price tag. Evaluate it and see if it fits your needs first.
- PocketPuTTY: Ah! the ole trusty terminal services client – now on windows mobile! Its pretty good in terms of the features it exposes, ofcourse it is still a stripped down version of the desktop client but it does support key based authentication. The terminal console looks just like the PC version but scaled down to fit the mobile phone screen. I personally think you’d need atleast a VGA screen like that of the HTC Touch Pro to be able to see something on the console.

Productivity took a hit today with some cool applications wielding their heads, courtesy of tweets (twitter posts). Here’s a quick run down of some of the candidates …
TweekDeck: After creating a google chrome web app for Twitter I realized it wasn’t the best option since it needed explicit page refreshes and did not display all tweets on a single page. Came across TweetDeck, an Adobe AIR application which delivers near-real-time tweets to your desktop. Some of the features I’ve seen so far include image post via twitpic.com, re-tweeting, topic search, topic tag clouds, url shortening (using a wide choice of service providers). The best thing is that the main twitter stream, replies and direct messages appear on a single “page” in vertical columns. Whats even better is that the app notifies you everytime there’s an update.
Emoze: I just tested this on my HTC Touch Pro. Its a fairly mature push email client for windows mobile. Very easy to deploy and use and configures gmail and yahoo email accounts automatically. The best part is that unlike seven and activesync it doesn’t leave an instance footprint in the task list. Not sure how it works on the inside but I’m happy as long as I get my emails near-instantly. It does try to take over syncing responsibilities from ActiveSync but this is optional.
Typalyzer: Very cool personality assessment web based tool that uses blog entries as a means to determine the author’s personality type. After consulting with my partner (psychologist) I gathered that the results indicated Myers-Briggs personality classification. Ofcourse there service carries a disclaimer stating that one’s writing style may have nothing to do with one’s perceived personality. Here’s what it had to say about me.
INTJ – The Scientists
The long-range thinking and individualistic type. They are especially good at looking at almost anything and figuring out a way of improving it – often with a highly creative and imaginative touch. They are intellectually curious and daring, but might be pshysically hesitant to try new things.
The Scientists enjoy theoretical work that allows them to use their strong minds and bold creativity. Since they tend to be so abstract and theoretical in their communication they often have a problem communcating their visions to other people and need to learn patience and use conrete examples. Since they are extremly good at concentrating they often have no trouble working alone.
It even charts the brain activity (using fusion charts). Look below for my brain activity.
