The changing face of Apple?

I was one of those techies out there waiting to get my hands on the iPhone Gen 1 because it was “cool”. A quick hands-on review of the device spoke otherwise. With significant shortcomings such as no 3G, GPS and bluetooth for data transfer the initial iPhone release seemed to be way overpriced. With the prices being slashed down more than 50% (for Australian consumers) do the iLoyals find themselves cheated? Perhaps so.

This post is more about Apple’s stake in the global consumer electronics industry. What remains unclear is why they are pushing only the iPhone so vigorously. Is it because today the mobile industry is growing faster than the PC industry. Logically thinking, buying another PC might be somewhat expensive. Buying another phone that you keep with you most of the day is not. The recent aggressive tactic definitely assures affordability of a quality product (who wouldn’t want a $300 top of the line iPhone, almost as good as buting a top notch iPod 6 months back). Especially when you consider the smartphone market. Although competitors’ products are still high prices Apple has just broken that barrier by slashing that cost. Wonder why they aren’t ready to do that for their Mac platform or family of products.

No doubt they new iphone will give them an edge in the market, not significant enough to undermine the competitors’ market but good enough to get them a foothold. The market here is not only consumer mobiles but also corporate mobiles. If a similar strategy were followed in the Desktop industry perhaps it could turn tables on their competitors.
